The cost of dealing devastating damage on the battlefield is just a bit of that soldier’s humanity. They can equip flamethrowers, miniguns, railguns, particle cannons and much more discovered via through research and alien autopsies. These Mechanized Exoskeleton Cybersuit Troopers no longer use cover, but they also become immune to poison and fire. These troopers are still human, but have essentially become a walking tank. Their arms and legs are removed, replaced by mechanized robotics, changing them into “MEC Troopers”. Cybernetics are an entirely different kettle of fish.Ĭybernetics strip not only all of your skills and genetic modifications, but also a bit of their humanity. You’ll be able to upgrade your brain, eyes, chest, skin, and legs, with two upgrade slots for each. Genetics give your soldiers access to rather innocuous such as retinal upgrades, discovered via alien autopsies. It’s at this point that you have to ask what you would do to win the war. Upon completion you’ll be able to build a Genetics and a Cybernetics Lab. Found on most of your missions, cannisters of recovered Meld will allow you to unlock a new research project called Meld Recombination. While money and alien technology are the currency in Enemy Unknown, the main resource you’ll want most in Enemy Within is Meld. ![]() It’s the “Meld” that’ll make your day though. If that wasn’t enough, Firaxis has also expanded a few of the options given to us by the DLC for the main product, most notably adding timed (and thankfully mostly optional) sub-objectives. Well, that is gone now as the Enemy Within adds over 40 new maps, giving you a constantly fresh setting throughout the campaign. After a while you had a inchworm strategy, allowing you to set up sight lines for snipers to rip down enemy interlopers with ease. ![]() One of the issues we had with the previous product was the short list of maps. In fact, when playing it on the PC you’ll select a separate executable to run the game with the enhancements baked in. Rather than tacking onto the end of Enemy Unknown, Enemy Within folds directly into the original product. You’ll always have soldiers who aren’t up to scratch, and you will find yourself face to face with the enemy mothership before long, ending the game. There might be enough time to research every piece of technology, but there just isn’t enough money or time to save everyone. I’m a completionist, and it wasn’t the type of game where you could do everything. Could there be enough to warrant another trip through the war-torn turn-based tactical world? Let’s find out, Commander. It tears open the original, fixes minor issues, adds a wealth of new features, and sews it back up to face an all new threat for the XCOM team. XCOM: Enemy Within is more like a Game of the Year edition. Enemy Within, the expansion to last year’s surprise hit, concerned me – it seemed I’d have to race through the full game to kick off the new expansion, but I was wrong. Unfortunately, as is often the case, I never got around to beating it on the PC. I loved it so much that I picked it up on the PC as well, happy to double dip on such a solid product. David Roberts did our original review of XCOM: Enemy Unknown on the PC, and I played it on the Xbox 360.

The biggest idle processes are avgui.exe followed by AVGIDSMonitor.exe and avgtray.exe. The processes do not seem to be using lots of resources, at least not when they are idle. I would expect that disabling Identity Protection would remove the AVGIDSMonitor.exe process. avgui.exe, likely linked to the graphical user interface of the AVG program.Īnother annoying thing is that it is not possible to reduce the number of processes by disabling features of the program.avgtray.exe, AVG Tray is monitoring application over all AVG components and is responsible for showing pop ups by AVG (email scanning, computer scanning, Resident Shield / LinkScanner detections, etc.).It also provides vital protection for the system areas of the computer according to AVG. avgrsa.exe: AVG Resident Shield Service, scans files as they are copied, opened and saved, and if a threat is found forbids the activation.Monitors processes and behaviors in realtime. AVGIDSMonitor.exe: AVG Identity Security Monitor process.avgcsrva.exe: The core scanning module of AVG.avgchsva.exe will minimize its system resource usage after the cache has been populated, but keep on running nevertheless. avgchsva.exe: AVG Cache Server Process, the process is apparently used to cache all system files in the background.Lets take a look at their names and their functions: Jojo even mentioned eight processes on his system. On the test system, AVG was using six background processes all the time. If you take a look at the system processes you may be in for another shock. At least a notification should be displayed to inform users of this fact. It is definitely not a good practice to store files of that size on the system partition, especially not if the user has selected a different partition for installation of the software. The second biggest folder is the update folder with a size of almost 70 Megabytes. It takes up 223 Megabytes on the system partition. I assume that folder is there to prevent the user from having to download the setup files again when making changes to the antivirus software. Most of the space is taken by the SetupBackup folder. This additional folder is located in Users\All Users\AVG10 on Windows 7, and uses 302 Megabytes on the hard drive. What's puzzling is that AVG creates another folder on the system drive, regardless of the selected installation path. The AVG installation folder on the hard drive will use roughly that size alone. The size on the hard drive however turns out to be more than that. Identity Protection: Monitors the way programs behave on the computer, blocking any activity that could lead to ID theft.ĪVG downloads roughly 130 Megabytes during installation, if the offline installer was used to install the antivirus software.AVG Surf-Shield: Protects users from drive by downloads and other exploits: Selected by default.AVG Search-Shield: Compatible with Google, Yahoo, MSN and Live search engines, displays safety information about search engine links.LinkScanner: Blocks dangerous websites in browsers automatically, and checks links on popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo.Personal E-Mail Scanner: Monitors email clients using POP3, SMTP and IMAP for phishing and spam.Lets take a closer look at the components that are installed by AVG Antivirus Free: And AVG will notify you if it encounters problems. The widget basically offers options to quickly run a scan and see if the system is protected, nothing that you cannot find out by clicking on the AVG icon itself. ![]() I did however select an installation directory on another system partition and decided to remove the AVG widget from the installation. For the sake of this article though, I have decided to install all suggested modules. If you remove features you are likely to end up with a lower size on the computer's hard drive and less background processes. Doing so provides options to install it on a different drive, or add and remove features from the program before installation. That did not sound well, and it frankly reminded me of Nero and how the company turned a lightweight and excellent CD and DVD burning software into an overweight beast.ĪVG 2011 Free can be customized before installation. ![]() ![]() Basically, Jojo mentioned that AVG was running eight background processes after installation, and that it's size of installation was exceeding the 500 Megabyte mark, with the majority of that installed on the system drive, regardless of the drive selected during installation. I could not believe it at first, but confirmed it after installing AVG Free on a test system. Jojo mailed me yesterday with some interesting information about AVG's latest free antivirus software. |
